What Your Cat Does When You’re Not at Home: Cat Sitter Insights
You pack your bag, close the door, and head out for the day — or maybe even a few. As you’re pulling out of the driveway, one thought lingers:
“I wonder what my cat will do without me?”
As a professional cat sitter, I get a front-row seat to the quiet (and not-so-quiet) lives of cats when their humans are away. Every visit tells a different story, but there are some sweet and surprising patterns I’ve come to recognize.
Let’s take a peek into what your feline friend really gets up to when no one’s watching.
1. They Notice You’re Gone
Even if your cat plays it cool, your absence doesn’t go unnoticed. Some wait near the door, others nap on your pillow or find comfort in your worn hoodie. I’ve even met cats who sleep beside their humans’ shoes while they’re away — like a soft, silent “I miss you.”
Cats feel. They just express it in whispers instead of shouts.
2. They Stick to Their Schedule
Cats are big fans of routine. Breakfast, bird-watching, bathroom breaks, and afternoon naps — it’s all part of the daily rhythm. When I visit, I aim to match their usual flow as closely as possible.
They appreciate the consistency. A predictable visit brings them peace.
3. They Play… on Their Terms
Some cats greet me at the door and immediately demand wand toy time. Others play coy until halfway through the visit — then burst into a surprise zoomie out of nowhere. There’s no one-size-fits-all.
But one thing’s certain: even the most independent cats benefit from enrichment and gentle companionship while you’re away.
4. They Watch the World Go By
Whether it’s a sun patch on the floor or a front-row seat to the bird feeder, cats love a good window view. I often find them perched in their favourite spot, soaking up the sights and sounds of the day. Watching the world helps them feel engaged and grounded.
Before you leave, open their favourite blinds or curtains. That simple view might be the highlight of their afternoon.
5. They Seek Out Comfort
When left alone, many cats gravitate toward the things that feel familiar — your scent, their favourite blanket, the quiet spot where they feel safest. Some cats greet me right away, others take a few visits to warm up. All of it is normal. Their home is their haven.
My role as a sitter is never to push — it’s to meet them where they are, with presence, patience, and care.
The Bottom Line:
Your cat may nap, snack, play, and patrol, protecting their home, while you’re away…
And, they are thrilled when you arrive home again.
Whether they show it with a head bump, a tail flick, or a slow blink — they love you in their own quiet, constant way.
